Second Annual ENA Awards (12/88)
THE SECOND ANNUAL ENA AWARDS The Electronic Networking Association recognition awards will be presented at the ENA conference in Allentown PA, May 25-28, 1989. The awards are named for David E. Rodale, ENA's "first member" in honor of his early efforts in this new medium. DAVID E. RODALE AWARDS PROGRAM David was the very first "official" ENA member. At the founding meeting in New York City in April 1985, those of us who were present made our commitments to create this new organization in various ways. There came a point when it was necessary to say "I am a...

ENA Update (2/88)
ENA UPDATE by Lisa Kimball As we go to press this month, Dave Hughes has finally received his packet radio license. This means that networkers may soon be able to access his Old Colorado City network without going through the phone lines! Wow! The implications of that are staggering! In spite of opposition from the phone companies and from many ham radio operators, it looks like low cost access to networks via packet is around the corner. ENA's promotion of "electronic democracy" is paying off. Two (still in the race) Presidential candidates are using computer conferencing to link their...

ENA Update (8/87)
ENA UPDATE by Lisa Kimball Many ENA members have been traveling this summer - some have taken a break from the online world and some have been signing on from around the globe. Our collective experiences have demonstrated again the range of obstacles which confront the traveling networker and U.S. networkers have come to appreciate some of the hassles our international colleagues face daily. Removing barriers to global networking has been a goal of ENA. We need to think of more effective ways to work toward easier access for everyone. The *hot* debate on the implications of FCC initiates...

ENA Update (7/87)
ENA UPDATE by Lisa Kimball This month the wires have been buzzing with discussions on almost every network about the FCC's proposed rulemaking on access fees charged to value added networks by local phone companies. This discussion has demonstrated a number of things: - telecommunications policy issues are VERY complex and involve a large cast of players and interest groups. - there are significant differences of opinion about which position is in the best interests of computer networkers and people in related businesses (and whether these intersts are the same). - few people feel confident that they have enough...

ENA Update (8/86)
ENA UPDATE by Lisa Kimball This is the first anniversary of the publication of the first issue of NETWEAVER! Getting out a monthly newsletter is quite a challenge. But I think we've found a technology which makes the process *significantly* easier. Computer conferencing provides an environment in which we can design issues, solicit and receive articles, edit material, compile the final product, distribute the newsletter, and interact with our readers. This makes the process very efficient *and* cost effective. But the biggest contribution of this technology is that it allows us to make producing NETWEAVER a real team effort--with...

ENA Update (7/86)
ENA UPDATE by Lisa Kimball ENA has taken some important leaps forward this month! As we go to press, a nominating committee has presented a slate of candidates to members of the RING (our "governing" conference) which will enable us to finally put our formal organization in place. A draft set of bylaws has been written to present to the IRS. We also got our first *royalty* check from NewsNet this month. This is exciting both because it is good for cash flow AND because it reflects the fact that people are interested in accessing NETWEAVER online! One of...

ENA Update (6/86)
ENA UPDATE by Lisa Kimball ENA members who could get to Philadelphia for a Memorial Day lunch had a special treat. In addition to good fellowship and a lively exchange of ideas, we finally signed the papers to incorporate the organization in Pennsylvania. We have more organizational work to be done to satisfy the Internal Revenue Service and complete our planning for the next couple of years-- but this is an important start! One of the other outcomes of this meeting was our feeling that more informal f-t-f get-togethers would be valuable. ENA members are invited to express their...

ENA Update (5/86)
ENA UPDATE by Lisa Kimball This month the medium really *is* the message! The biggest news in ENA is recognition of NETWEAVER by the Computer Press Association. We are VERY proud to be the 1st Runner-up for Best Online Publication - and we'll be seeing if we can top that next year! You can read all about it in Mike Greenly's account in this issue. We can also announce that NETWEAVER has been accepted by NewsNet which will make the ideas important to ENA available to the many journalists, researchers, and businesses which access that system. NETWEAVER is a...

ENA Update (2/86)
ENA UPDATE by Lisa Kimball ORGANIZATION ============ We've done it! Our new RING structure is now set up in ENA's electronic office on UNISON. So far, about fifteen CLUSTERS have formed around key ENA activities and selected someone to report to the whole group. These representatives (we're calling them SEATS to indicate that the role may rotate among members of the cluster rather than belonging to a single individual) have agreed to sign on regularly (at least every four days) to keep track of the "big picture" of ENA and make policy and other decisions. We hope this will...

ENA Update (1/86)
ENA UPDATE by Lisa Kimball We usually review ENA's activities for the past month in this column. But this month it seems fitting to review ENA's accomplishments of 1985 as well. It's been quite a year! PORTING ======= "Porting"--the process of downloading material from one conferencing system and uploading it to another--really took off when we began discussing issues related to moderating online discussions and managing computer networks in a set of conferences on multiple networks which began last January. Large amounts of material became part of our common knowledge base, and we got excited about the experience we...

ENA Update (12/85)
ENA UPDATE by Lisa Kimball The most important thing that has happened in ENA since the last issue of NETWEAVER is our *very* successful conference in D.C.! We exchanged incredible amounts of information and experience in a group which included people from many different countries, many different networks, and many different networking backgrounds. We talked about global networking, telecommunications policy, managing computer conferencing, educational applications, networking in government, electronic enterprise, user support, marketing, regional and local networks, organizations with network structures, and the current and future state-of-the-art of conferencing technology. We also heard speakers using conferencing in a wide...
